The Benefit Of Aging As a Homeowner In Hawai‘i- Property Tax Reductions!
Did you know that Hawai'i County helps homeowners with their property taxers by offering an exemption once you reach 60? And every four years, you get incrementally lower property taxes? (This was put in place so that senior homeowners would benefit and be able to keep their homes. A win for our communities!)
Hawai‘i County Exemption Brackets by Age
The standard property tax exemption amounts based on the homeowner's age (calculated as of January 1 of the assessment year) are:
• Under age 60: $50,000 exemption
• Ages 60–64: $85,000 exemption
• Ages 65–69: $90,000 exemption
• Ages 70–74: $105,000 exemption
• Ages 75–79: $110,000 exemption
• Age 80 and over: $125,000 exemption
Key Qualifications
• Primary Residence: You must own and physically occupy the property as your principal home for more than 200 days per calendar year.
• Filing Requirement: You must submit a claim for home exemption with proof of ownership and age to the County of Hawai‘i Real Property Tax Office.
• Filing Deadline: Applications must typically be filed by December 31 preceding the tax year
You can get more info here and this is also helpful for new homeowners who are paying higher taxes if the house was owned by an investor or second home owner: https://hawaiipropertytax.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/114/2026/10/Deadlines.pdf
